‘Meet the Composer’ offers a fascinating insight into the life and work of one of the foremost composers of our time. Sir Peter Maxwell Davies lives in the Orkney Islands off the north coast of Scotland where he composes nearly all his music. He was appointed Master of the Queen’s Music in March 2004. Affectionately known as Max, he has written across the widest gamut of musical genre and in many styles. The power to communicate forcefully and directly with his audiences manifests itself whether it be in his profoundly argued symphonic works, hailed in The Times as being ‘the most important symphonic cycle since Shostakovich’, his delightful musical theatrical works for children, or his sometimes outrageously witty light orchestral works.
Outspoken, passionate and at times controversial, this is a magnificent opportunity to meet thecomposer, and to encounter one of Britain’s hugely intellectual and creative figures of today.
Each work I write relates to what I wrote before…It is one long, extended reference, in that this music is a distillation of - is – my real life, even including its inadequacies and mistakes. I have no illusions about being important as composer or person: I am pleased to have the opportunity to write and that the music is played; and I should be happy to be remembered by two tunes and a dictionary footnote
